When Science Meets Magic in Our Classrooms
Neuroscience tells us that creativity emerges when the brain’s free-wheeling Default Mode Network dances with its Executive Control Network—melding daydreams and discipline into original ideas. At CFA, we harness both sides of that brain-gymnasium:
Structured Exploration: Our after-school flagship program,
Fashion Runway Production, leads students through a proven creative process—brainstorming, sketching, fabric selection, fashion design, embellishing, and more—all while still leaving room for those serendipitous sparks that turn a sketch into a statement runway piece.
Unstructured Play: At our
summer camp, we stage hands-on fashion challenges: each group of students grab a trash bag of random found materials and must upcycle them into a runway-ready look—whether it’s a rooftop party-hour ensemble in New York or an avant-garde gala gown—giving them white space to invent, iterate, and surprise themselves.
The Tangible Benefits of Our Creative Alchemy
By treating creativity as both artistry and applied science, our participants gain more than pretty garments:
- Empowered Problem-Solving. When Uma saw the last roll of turquoise blue ribbon gone, she went to the bag of fabric scraps and pulled a large enough piece of blue shine fabric and intentionally cut stripes after stripes. After she had as many as she needed, she sculpted a 3D flower and hand-sewn into jeans; making the most amazing design.
- Intergenerational Connection. At our classrooms kids and adults of multiple generations connect eye-to-eye, communicating and collaborating on projects together. We have assistants as young as 14-yrs-old all way to retired professionals who gracefully share their talents and wisdom. We all learn, inspire and enrich each other.
- Sustainable Mindset. From learning vintage fashions to repurposing leftovers, our young designers learn that fashion needn’t be disposable. Our students not only constantly divert textiles from landfills, but they also turn them into teachable moments for their families and friends. We recently learned of a 7-year-old who self-started a fundraiser in her neighborhood, collecting pre-loved clothes and educating neighbors as she shared alarming fast fashion data and facts with adults and children she encountered around her block.
